“IT IS REVEALED THAT PRESIDENT'S CHIEF OF STAFF AND STATE TIMBER CORPORATION CHAIRMAN ARE IN BRIBERY NET WHILE ACCEPTING BRIBE OF 20 MILLION RUPEES”
The first meeting of the All island series of Divisional Consultations to gather public options and proposals on the “National Action Plan to Combat Bribery and Corruption-Sri Lanka” organized by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption was successfully held on 03rd May 2018 at the Water’s Edge Hotel, Colombo.
The authorized Investigation Officers of CIABOC have apprehended a Planning Officerattached to the Urban Development Authority, Western Province on 04.04.2018 when obtaining a bribe of Rs.15,000/- reduced from the initially solicited amount of Rs.40,000/- to hand-over the complainant’s file to the planning committee to get approved the allotment plan which previously got the approval for the boundary plan having obtained a bribe of Rs.15,000/- in 03 occasions.
In almost all countries including Sri Lanka, Bribery and corruption create political scandals and delay social developments, interrupt good governance and democratic values, destroy law and social cohabitation, breach human rights, create disparity in resource distribution and defame country image in international arena and among investors. Countries at present are trying to rescue themselves from bribery and corruption clouding over all fields. Hence, many have created local, regional and international laws, conventions and mechanisms to prevent bribery and corruption.
Honourable Magistrate imposed two years rigorous imprisonment to a Police Constable attached to Veyangoda Police Station for obtaining Rs.2000/- as a bribe.
Investigation Officers of CIABOC have apprehended a Police Constable- 74317 named Geekiyanage Niluka Perera attached to the Crime Branch of the Police Station – Fort while he was returning the mobile phone and the National Identity Card belonged to the complainant having obtained a bribe of Rs.10, 000/- as a part of the initial amount of Rs.20, 000/- solicited to refrain from taking legal action against an alleged illegal conduct of the complainant when he was standing at the Railway Station – Fort.
The Investigation Officers of CIABOC have apprehended a Grama Niladhari on 05.04.2018 when obtaining a bribe of Rs.5,000/- reduced from the initially solicited amount of Rs.10,000/- to approve a request letter to clean a land owned by the complainant under a Swarna Bhumi deed. The Investigation Officers of CIABOC have apprehended an Assistant Legal Officer and a member of the Aurvedic Formulary Committee in the presence of a decoy of the Commission while accepting a bribe of Rs.50,000/- as an advance of the initially solicited bribe of Rs.03 lakhs and subsequently reduced up to Rs.2.5 lakhs to issue the annual permit for the year 2018 of a company namely Sanoda Herbal Products through Ayurvedic Formulary Committee (Committee which approves the quality of products to export or for domestic sale)
With the aim of bringing in amendments to the Declaration of Assets and Liabilities Law, No.1 of 1975 the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) held a three-day roundtable discussion on 14th, 15th and 16th of March, 2018 at CIABOC.
The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) as a part of its effort in combating corruption held a two day workshop on 12th and 13th of March, 2018 at Hotel Taj Samudra, Colombo. The workshop based on the theme “Asset Disclosure and Conflict of Interest as Measures to Enhance Integrity in the Public Sector” was a joint effort of CIABOC, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Stolen Assets Recovery Initiative (StAR), World Bank (WB).
