During the Commission’s investigation conducted on the fraudulent registration of vehicles at the Department of Motor Traffic, the investigation on vehicle HG-5087 revealed that the Department had first registered a lorry to this number and on 15.08.2022 its Hambantota Office issued an illegal certificate to the same number for a jeep. Investigations were conducted regarding a Deputy Commissioner who approved and printed the certificate.

He made a bail application in this regard to the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court under Section 21 of the Bail Act No. 30 of 1997 to prevent arresting him. It was called in the open courts on 22.01.2025 and was rejected after considering the facts of both parties.

The vehicle in concern was taken into custody earlier and was handed over to Sri Lanka Customs to charge the applicable duty and fees.
