On 02nd April 2025, Colombo High Court No. 01 Judge Adithya Patabendige sentenced the former Chief Minister of the North Central Province S. M. Ranjith Samarakoon who committed the act of corruption in terms of Section 70 of the Bribery Act through malpractices in ordering fuel to his personal secretary’s vehicle while he was serving as the Chief Minister of the North Central Province.
Accordingly, both the first accused, the Chief Minister of the North Central Province and the second accused, who was his personal secretary, were convicted guilty of two charges. Both were sentenced to 16 years of rigorous imprisonment and were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 200,000/- with an additional 2-year prison term in default of payment.
