On a complaint made by a person in Ambalanthota, Beragama area, Investigation Officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the Secretary of Sooriyawewa Pradeshiya Sabha on 07.06.2023.

The complainant has acquired a space from the Sooriyawewa fair for the year 2020/2021 on lease basis under his brother’s name, and as the market did not operate during the Covid-19 pandemic period he has requested to make some relief for the amount deposited. The Secretary of the Sooriyawewa Pradeshiya Sabha has agreed to return a portion of the deposited money and has solicited a bribe of Rs. 100,000.00 for the purpose. The amount was later brought down to Rs. 50,000/-, and the arrest was made inside the Sooriyawewa Pradeshiya Sabha while accepting the bribe.
